I recently came across an interesting book written by Shri P.S.Bhatnagar, titled as, “Behind the Power - vignettes from my life in IAS.” The book is precious not only because it makes an interesting reading, but also because it gives ample insight into the working of the complex power corridor of the bureaucracy of India responsible for carrying out the agenda of governance of this vast and varied country.

In the book Shri P.S.Bhatnagar who retired from this premier service in 2002 has highlighted his experiences - some frustrating and others rewarding as well. During his service of 37 years Shri Bhatnagar had to deal with the people in top echelons of power and authority and their changing whims and fancies. The stories related in the book show that by taking a detached view and keeping a low profile but a firm and human approach he could successfully tackle the most ugly and demanding situations without loosing his nerve. He maintains that since

his motives were clean, more often then not, a helping hand emerged from somewhere to provide the kindly light to move the process forward.

The book enables the reader to ponder a while and smile a little. The various characters described in the narratives can be found every where and at all times. It is not the intention of the author to enter into any controversy or to appear to be sullying reputations; hence he has omitted names as far as possible. He has studied them with a human angle as he believes “it is the kind of emotions, reactions and motivations that these characters display that is important and let me assure the readers that the same characters continue to strut the stage, only their names and faces and ages have changed. There is re-enactment of the same drama with different situations every day.”

The book has been published by MANAS PUBLICATIONS of Ansari Road ,Daryagang. In 2004. Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

In my opinion if searched seriously one will not find any dearth of literary material churned out by the members of the community from time to time. Only thing is that such contribution does not ordinarily come to the notice of the community members. I feel that there is an urgent need to bring out in the open the "literary contribution of the community members" for wider appreciation of the members, particularly by upcoming generation. I hope that this activity will gain momentum in time to come as more and more members of the cmmunity start visiting the site and as it becomes fully functional.
