Coming mainly from northern India, Bhatnagars, better called Kayasth Bhatnagars, form a small, close-knit community which is a part of the predominant Hindu populace of the country.
Bhatnagars are progressive, intellectually keen, educated, cultured, forward looking and form a distinct segment of the fast advancing middle class society of India.
Bhatnagars share the same religious beliefs as the rest of the Hindu society. They are also no different when they unite their children in marriages. They celebrate the same festivals with gusto, eat the same food though with a little extra spicy flavor which they relish, wear the clothing in the same style but with a grace of their own and enjoy a good living with a keen sense of social interaction.
Bhatnagars have a distinct creative bent of mind. Majority of them are hard working, sincere and reliable. Till recently members of this community were known for largely occupying seats of power in the administrative corridors of the Government of India. But this trend is now reversed and the upcoming generation is equally at ease in all sorts of new avocations, some have even ventured in hard core businesses quite successfully.
Women in Bhatnagar community enjoy the same status as men. Matching their counterparts in education, majority of them also enjoy independent economic status, contributing substantially to the standard of living of their families. Highly religious and devout as they are they stand equally tall in the society with their men.
It is said and widely believed that all Bhatnagars are interrelated, they are like an extended family many (times) fold. They prefer to marry their children within the folds of the community, though they are not averse to marrying outside the community as well. However, this social fabric is under increasing pressure in today's context. Bhatnagars no longer confine to their traditional home base. They have spread far and wide in whole of the globe in search of greener pastures. The traditional family units are increasingly getting isolated and feel deeply the urgent need of enlightened support with global reach. The need was never greater then today.
Bhatnagar community as such already enjoys the support of a number of traditional support groups at district and town's level.
